The Jefferson County Historical Society is excited to open three new exhibits in September at the Museum of Art + History.
In the Ferguson Gallery, Kim Kopp’ exhibit A Practice of Noticing —1995-2025 opens on September 4. This retrospective exhibition features works of many different media from throughout Kopp’s expansive career. She writes: “Over the past 35 years my art practice has continued to evolve and thread its way through time and place. Walking is important to my process. It connects the external world and the inner world of the studio. On my ritual paths I notice daily and seasonal changes, recording what attracts my attention, 'navigating' my way through time.”
In the Wilson Gallery, a community curated show titled The History of Home: Now opens on September 6. This exhibit will feature illuminating infographics designed by the Housing Solutions Network, and work curated by Eden Bloom from their Curating Empathy project that launched with Jefferson County Public Health earlier this year. Curating Empathy utilizes photographs, narratives, and objects to highlight the housing crisis in our community through the lens of our unhoused neighbors and the agencies that support them.
In the Fire Hall, a new traveling exhibit, Filipinos and Washington’s Waterfront, will open on September 18. This exhibit uncovers powerful stories of connection between Filipino communities and Washington’s waterfronts—from the shores of Bainbridge Island to the canneries of Alaska. This exhibit was created by the Filipino American National Historical Society and Maritime Washington National Heritage Area, with support from the National Park Foundation and National Trust for Historic Preservation.
All three of these new exhibitions will be on display through December 31.
Adding to the excitement, the Port of Port Townsend will be sponsoring our Free First Saturday on September 6 – aptly concurrent with the Wooden Boat Festival! Visit the Museum from 11AM to 7PM and enjoy free admission all day.
The Museum of Art + History is open Thursday – Sunday, 11 AM - 4 PM, with extended hours on the first Saturday of each month as part of Free First Saturday.
