Plan Your Visit to the Research Center

Guidelines for an Enjoyable Experience

  • Temperature: Our research library is kept at a cool 68-72°F to protect the collection, so please dress accordingly.

  • Handling Materials: Only pencils are allowed in the main research area to prevent ink transfer or accidental damage. You’ll be asked to wash your hands upon arrival; gloves are generally not used, as they can reduce dexterity and inadvertently damage delicate materials. Our archivist will let you know if gloves are needed.

  • Food and Drink: No food or drink is permitted in the research room. A nearby kitchenette is available for storing water bottles.

  • One Material at a Time: To help us keep our tens of thousands of documents in order, Research Center staff will bring you one item at a time.

  • Available Tools: We provide a JCHS computer in the research room for browsing our online collection and other research resources.

  • Photography and Licensing: You’re welcome to take non-flash photographs for personal use. For any reproduction, publication, or sharing online, please consult our staff about licensing and fees.

  • Research Assistance: Our staff is happy to help identify additional materials that may be relevant to your research. If you need ongoing research support, we offer research services for a fee and can connect you with professional researchers if needed.

  • Artworks and 3D Artifacts: Please schedule an advance appointment for access to any artworks or three-dimensional artifacts.
