Understories is a collection of sculptures by John Strohbehn that reflects a journey spanning more than a decade of carving wood and stone. Working from his studio in Gardiner, Washington, John creates sculptures that respond to the natural character, history, and possibilities of each material. His work explores the collaboration between artist and object, revealing stories embedded in the grain of wood, the character of stone, and the creative process itself. Together, these sculptures celebrate both the inherent qualities of the materials and John's evolving relationship with his practice.

HOME: The Living History of Place is JCHS’s anchor exhibition, filling many of the galleries of the Museum of Art + History. Through historical objects, contemporary art, community voices, and interactive experiences, HOME explores the many ways people experience, and have experienced, home in Jefferson County.
HOME explores what it means to belong through stories of people, place, and community. It brings together history, art, and contemporary perspectives to examine the many ways we create and experience home.

This "evergreen" exhibit features stories about the history of Jefferson County since it's formal establishment in 1852. Learn about the Victorian-era architecture of Port Townsend and City Hall, about the lore of the county's rough past, and how this all makes what we see today.

Designed for our youngest visitors, the Early Learning Play Space invites kids to discover, create, read, and build while exploring the animal homes of the Olympic Peninsula. Investigate a discovery wall filled with toys, museum specimens, sensory games, and more; make art at the creation station; curl up with a book in the reading nook; or build big with oversized blocks.
