About the Play

How do you break free from an assigned narrative?

Carmelita: A Vindication for the Unwritten follows Carmelita Colon, a determined woman who challenges the limitations history has placed on her. Her story moves from 1860s Mexico to the Washington Territory, weaving together threads of gold rushes, outlaws, immigration, food traditions, and the pursuit of self-determination.

Through hardship, resilience, and community, Carmelita’s life reveals how individuals shape their own destinies—and how critical it is to reclaim and tell our full histories.

The play invites the audience to reconsider how history is recorded, remembered, and retold—a perfect complement to the mission of the Jefferson County Historical Society.
