RESEARCH CENTER BROCHURE (PDF)

THE NEED TO EXPAND:
The collections of the Jefferson County Historical Society include an estimated half million historic documents, more than 20,000 photographs and 15,000 artifacts. The current Research Center opened in 2003 and was quickly filled to capacity with research materials and researchers.

The new facility will have ample space for all of the collections and will provide proper environmental controls to ensure their long-term preservation. Artifacts will be readily accessible for exhibiting and for research purposes. Additional public space will also become available.

Preliminary drawings Research Center addition.

The project:
   Two-story, 8,700-square-foot steel structure
Temperature and humidity controlled space for all JCHS collections
Compact shelving system for maximum space efficiency
Conservation lab for care and preservation of artifacts
   Exhibition prep workshop
Covered walkway connecting the new building to the existing building

Bev Brice and Lynne Sterling break ground on
Research Center expansion.

Members and friends of the Jefferson County Historical Society shoveled away some snow and broke ground for the expanded Research Center. The building will be completed this summer. The Research Center will remain open during most of the construction.

Little & Little Construction of Port Townsend was chosen by a committee of JCHS and JCGS members to be the general contractor for the project. Here, Bob Little (with shovel) and Alex Little (right) help break ground.
