Historic Properties Survey

Mission Statement

Our Historic Properties Survey will identify and evaluate all structures in Jefferson County. Why? To determine whether they may be of architectural, cultural, historic, archaeological or engineering significance.

The information gathered is being used to create an inventory. An inventory such as this is the basis of a good preservation program. It will be available to anyone researching property; to the County and communities therein to use as a basic city planning tool and therefore, will be indispensable as a tool to use in developing any all-inclusive city or county plan. It will be available as the backbone of a pro-active preservation program and ultimately will comply with federal review re-quirements and state land use mandates.

Once properties are documented, it will be easier for owners to determine whether they are eligible for various kinds of federal, state or local assistance if they decide to restore, preserve or rehabilitate buildings. Our data base will also provide information for historical research. For instance, we are documenting some buildings that are in such bad condition that they will fall down and all that will be left is the HPS documentation. Good examples are many of the barns in the County.

Volunteers needed for this project are of four kinds: researchers who specialize in the history of the property; surveyors who concentrate on architectural descriptions; persons who keep our database functioning properly and who record information; and photographers who record visually what we are documenting.

Our biggest needs are for researchers who enjoy delving into house history and for surveyors who would like to work in the field recording what they see. We'll provide training. Please come join us!
