January
The Board of Trustees'
Annual Retreat
was held. Linda
Maguire was re-elected president with
JoAnn Bussa
as vice president.
Ann Welch
presented a program on
Port Townsend: Then
and Now based on her popular CD.
The New Exhibits
Committee hosted a presentation by
Formations,
an exhibit design company from Portland, as a kickoff to their work which
continued throughout the year. Teachers county-wide continued to utilize the
traveling Museum
Trunks.
February
Historical Society members were
treated to a preview of the new
Jefferson County Museum
created in City Hall following a two year temporary location in the Kuhn
Building. The Education Committee unveiled its latest traveling museum trunk,
"Celestials
in Jefferson County."
March
The new
Jefferson County Museum
opened on a full-time basis. The
First Saturday
Gallery Walk was added to the
museum’s exhibit schedule and art exhibitions were hung in the historic city
council chamber throughout the year. The
Port Townsend Victorian
Festival
drew visitors to popular events including the JCHS scholarship fashion shows,
cemetery tours, a military encampment in Memorial Field, and period theatricals.
April
Fraternally
Yours…The Mutual Benefit Societies of Jefferson County’s Settlers,
a major new temporary exhibit curated by
Marsha Moratti opened in the museum. The
Founders' Day
annual membership meeting featured
John Vaillant,
author of
The
Golden Spruce.
Historic Preservation
Awards were presented to James "Bonzo"
DeLeo, Gusta Aldrich Lester, Ann Welch, Port of Port Townsend, Jane Souzon, and
Charles and Donna Abbott. The
Mary Johnson Award
for outstanding restoration was accepted by representatives of the City of Port
Townsend, Dawson Construction, and ARC Architects for the restoration of City
Hall. Lifetime
Achievement Awards were presented to
David Hero and Barbara Marseille.
Volunteer of the Year
Awards were presented to the members
of the City Hall Capital Campaign Committee.
Walking Tours
were conducted for cruise ship passengers. JCHS entered the
Brinnon Loyalty Days
Parade.
JCHS officially contracted with Jefferson County to manage the
Olympic Peninsula Gateway
Visitor Center with the goal of
creating a visitor destination with exhibits focusing on agriculture, logging,
fishing and the early lodging industry.
May
The
Rothschild House
opened for the season with an exhibit of
Wedding Gowns
displayed throughout the house. JCHS
participated in the
Rhody Festival
Parade
with a float sponsored and created by
Vintage Hardware.
June
JCHS booths were set up at the
Farmers Market
to promote membership and continued throughout most of the season. Historic
Walking Tours of Uptown and Downtown
Port Townsend began.
July
The
Annual Fund Drive
began. Walking
Tours continued. An exhibit of
Jefferson County
Quilts
was installed at the Rothschild House. JCHS entered the
Hadlock Days Parade.
History Camp began at the Rothschild
House.
August
A booth was created by the Education
Committee for the
Jefferson County Fair.
Walking Tours
continued. A
Garden Tea was held at the Rothschild
House and a
Victorian Festival Open House was
held for potential volunteers.
September
The
Rothschild House
completed its season. The Education Committee participated in the
Wooden Boat Festival.
Scheduled Walking
Tours were completed for the season.
October
The annual
Family History Open House
was held at the Research Center.
Walking Tours
for cruise ship passengers resumed. The
Haunted Jail
thrilled a crowd of revelers on Halloween.
November
Deck the (Old
City) Halls and the
Members' Open House
ushered in the festive holiday season.
December
Two elegant
Holiday Teas
were hosted by Linda Maguire at the historic
Bartlett House. The year ended with
First Night,
a New Year's Eve celebration of heritage and
art in and around historic City Hall featuring the new tradition of "raising the
anchor."
