Welcome It's great to be back in historic City Hall. After many years of planning and fund-raising and two years of actual restoration work, while the JCHS offices and museum were relocated five blocks away, it's nice to be home. The 1892 building (that's the year it was completed, although it's also commonly dated as an 1891 building—the year construction began) has never looked better. It has been the home of JCHS since 1951, the year of Port Townsend's centennial celebration, although some reports indicate that the Society was asked to put exhibits into the vacated spaces as early as 1948. 2007 gave us the opportunity to thank all of the people who worked so hard to make the City Hall project a success: volunteers, fund-raisers, architects, designers, builders, masons, painters, carpenters and all of the wonderful donors. While historic City Hall is our headquarters and museum, JCHS is a county-wide organization and that fact has never been more evident. Our programs are all county-wide and our facilities are, too. The Research Center on Highway 19 is the only real estate actually owned by JCHS. Due to the enormous popularity of the Research Center, we are planning to quadruple its size. We will have more space for researchers and also bring all of our collections together under one roof. We will open the expanded Research Center in 2010. During 2007, we also undertook the management of the Olympic Peninsula Gateway Visitor Center. We are turning the Visitor Center into a facility that will inform visitors about the heritage of the county and encourage them to spend more time with us. The remodeled Center will be a destination for tourists and residents alike and will open in the summer of 2008. But, an even bigger, better, Center is on the horizon, so keep watching. Through our facilities in the county seat and elsewhere, we strive to fulfill our mission: “To actively discover, collect, preserve, and promote the heritage of Jefferson County in the State of Washington.” William L.
