Collections AND Exhibits

This was a year of gratefully moving back into the beautifully restored City Hall building.  Before the year began, exhibits were back in the Court Room and temporary exhibit gallery.  They feature stories about Early Explorers, Native Americans, James Swan, early Chinese settlers, Port Townsend: Then and Now photographs and interactive CD, photographs of early life in Jefferson County and an area featuring new additions to the JCHS collection.

Throughout January and February the Fire Hall was filled with exhibits on Jefferson County's maritime heritage and the Fire Department.  An area devoted to rotating collections featured the Bash family shell collection.  A children's-only area invites kids to come play.  Throughout the museum, there is an emphasis on sharing history by displaying historic artwork.

New Gallery Walk exhibits, offered on the first Saturday of every month, widened the circle of Museum visitors  The first, an exhibit of paintings by Adeline Willoughby McCormack was huge success.  A portrait exhibit of both historic and contemporary works and two historic photograph shows brought Gallery Walkers into the restored City Council Chambers and into the museum.

Fraternally Yours…The mutual benefit societies of Jefferson County's Settlers in the temporary exhibit gallery featured historic examples of the extravagant regalia and original documents and photographs from local fraternal organizations. All served to illustrate the appeal of clubs that provided socially acceptable entertainment and the security of friends during our county's boisterous early years.

An historic wedding gown exhibit, followed by a quilt exhibit helped draw visitors to the Rothschild House.  Beautiful photographs of the wedding gown exhibit were used to create an online version of the exhibition.

The year ended with the challenge of finding new storage spaces for a significant part of the artifact collection, emphasizing the need for the new climate-controlled storage facility planned as part of the Research Center expansion.
